At Woodham Burn, we believe maths is more than just numbers—it’s a way to understand the world around us. Our aim is to help every child become a confident mathematician who can solve problems, think logically, and see how maths connects to everyday life and future careers.
How We Teach Maths
We want all children to enjoy maths and do well in it. To make this happen, we follow a clear and consistent way of teaching that’s based on how children learn best. Our lessons are carefully designed to:
- Break learning into small, manageable steps
- Use clear language and visuals to avoid confusion
- Teach key vocabulary and number facts
- Follow a simple structure: I do, We do, You do—so children are guided before working independently
- Include daily mental maths sessions to build speed and confidence
- Provide dedicated problem-solving lessons once children are secure in the basics
We make sure children have enough time to fully understand each topic before moving on. This helps build strong foundations and boosts confidence.
Helping Children Remember What They Learn
To help children remember their learning, we use regular review sessions and carefully planned activities. These include:
- Mental maths starters linked to what they’re learning
- Practical lessons when needed
- Problem-solving opportunities
- Time to practise and consolidate learning
- Regular check-ins to see how children are doing and what support they might need
Checking Progress and Giving Support
We regularly assess children’s progress to make sure they’re on track and to spot anyone who needs extra help. This includes:
- Quick checks during lessons
- Pre- and post-topic assessments
- Fluency checks
- End-of-unit assessments
If a child needs support, we offer same-day intervention to help them catch up quickly. Our maths lead also monitors progress across the school to make sure our approach is working well and to make improvements where needed.

As a school, we subscribe to numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars. We strongly encourage children to use these websites to hone their basic skills. All children have access to both of these programs, which can be used on most phones, tablets and computers. If you have any difficulties login in, please contact your class teacher.
